Chomp and Chat Ride to Tarago Pub – Sunday 17 May 2015

Meeting at Hume in the wintery sunshine we were surprised by the large number of riders arriving – I think last weekend’s miserable weather kept everyone indoors and we all felt the need for a ride through the countryside to a pub with a welcoming fire and good food.

Following the ride leaders brief, we journeyed through Queanbeyan taking a right on Captains Flat Road – fortunately seeing no kangaroos as warned about on the road signs – then left on to Briar Sharrow Road, another left on Hoskinstown Road to Bungendore, another the right on to the Kings Highway and then left along the Goulburn Road to Tarago and the Loaded Dog Hotel.

There was quite a bit of activity at the Hotel and unfortunately for us a local car club had also booked lunch at the pub and they got the dining room.  We were directed to the beer garden at the back of the pub where the sun’s rays had yet to shine. But we are nothing if not tough, and quoting from “Ulysses”, decided “not to yield” to the cold, and kept our jackets on as we waited for lunch to arrive. During this time the publican kindly came out and started some of the gas heaters as well as a lovely large log fire - we were soon all warm and toasty. Most of us had ordered some sort of burger and all came with what I think are amongst the best chips I’ve ever had. Andrew and Ian were cleverer than most and had ordered early and so were served first – Andrew’s chips kept us from starving while we waited for our meals.

A couple of hours later satisfactorily fed and watered most of us wandered back along Bungendore Road to home.  A few went onto the Roselea Cafe at Lake Bathurst to buy some jam, and be tempted by the abandoned kittens living there looking for homes (c’mon Garry – just one little homeless kitten!).

As usual for a chomp and chat this ride was short on riding, long on eating and repartee, and great fun for just getting out on the weekend for a quick trip in the sunshine. Just enough to get you through another week at work.

PS – the Loaded Dog Hotel offers weekend accommodation at just $40 per person per night (including a continental breakfast) with secure lock-up parking for motorcycles.
