What a huge turnout on a beaut day for a ride to Araluen. Ron and I arrived early to grab a coffee with Andrew at the R&R Café, only to find Mr and Mrs Winters also there - a wonderful catch up all round.
I was a little concerned when I called the pub from the Bungendore IGA and said we had ’22 coming for lunch – please call me back if that’s a problem’ since it was already 11 am. Thankfully, I didn’t get a return phone call. 21 bikes headed off, with ride leader Ron shouldering all that responsibility and his trusty sidekick Kim bringing up tail end Charlie.
I don’t think I’ve ever seen a more eclectic display of motorcyles (listed below in sorta kinda alpha order by marque) – a scooter, a few adventure bikes, an old school Triumph, Harley’s, a moto guzzi, tourers and sporties – and a Goldwing. The ride to Braidwood was glorious and the run down into the spectacular valley where the pub sits beckoning was superb. Bit bumpy, few potholes, a bit of dirt runoff across the road – but still superb.
The food was great pub grub – I’m sure my steak sandwich contained half a cow. Mark was very surprised when the waitress delivering his schnitzel, with at least half a plate of chips nestled next to the schnitty, said “I’ll bring you out more chips love, we ran out while I was plating yours up”.
In the end we were all very satisfied, we soaked up some sunshine, had a chat with the resident cockatoo and a visiting baby French bulldog, solved the problems of the world, and headed back to Canberra. We hit a bit of traffic in Braidwood, but once you got through that bottleneck it was pretty smooth riding all the way home.
